Ongoing studies registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, using umbilical cord– and fat-derived MSCs, are working to build that stronger evidence base now.

    Who Might Be a Candidate

    • People with RA that hasn't responded well to standard biologic or DMARD therapy may be interested in enrolling in a registered clinical trial (searchable at ClinicalTrials.gov) to access MSC therapy under research oversight.
    • Patients should be cautious of clinics offering MSC "treatments" outside of a formal clinical trial, since these are not FDA-approved and are not held to the same safety and reporting standards.
    • Red flags include clinics that guarantee results, charge large out-of-pocket fees for unproven infusions, or downplay the need for a rheumatologist's involvement.
    • Anyone considering this route should first discuss it with their treating rheumatologist and review credible guidance, such as the Arthritis Foundation's position on unproven stem cell interventions.

    Bottom Line

    The research on MSC therapy for rheumatoid arthritis is a genuinely hopeful area of investigation — early trials show meaningful symptom improvement in a meaningful share of patients, with a safety profile that hasn't raised major red flags so far.
